For L = 8 and W = 5: area = 8*5 = 40 square units; perimeter = 2*(8+5) = 26 units; diagonal = sqrt(64+25) = sqrt(89) = 9.4330 units.
How to interpret the result
Area measures the inside region, perimeter measures the boundary, and the diagonal joins opposite corners.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not report perimeter in square units or area in linear units. Use the Pythagorean theorem only after squaring both side lengths.
Assumptions and limitations
The formula assumes a flat rectangle with right angles. It does not account for material thickness, openings, or irregular edges.
Practical use and checks
The Rectangle Calculator helps estimate floor area, border length, or the diagonal span of a rectangular object. Enter length 8 and width 5 as a check; area should be 40 square units, perimeter 26 units, and diagonal about 9.4330 units. The diagonal check comes from the right triangle with legs 8 and 5, so squaring both dimensions before taking the square root is a useful way to catch a misplaced input. If both dimensions are feet, label the area as square feet and the diagonal as feet. Use area for coverage, perimeter for edging or trim, and diagonal for a corner-to-corner fit. The calculator assumes the corners are right angles and the sides are straight, so it is not a substitute for measuring an old room with bowed walls or an irregular outline. Openings, wall thickness, door recesses, and waste material are not subtracted or added automatically. A small error in both dimensions can compound in an area estimate, so measure the same finished surface consistently. For an L-shaped room, split it into nonoverlapping rectangles, calculate each area, and add them; entering an overall length and width would overstate the usable area.
