Variables and inputs
Part Value defaults to 25 and Percentage defaults to 20%. The percentage must be positive in the visible UI.
Worked example
If 25 is 20% of a whole: whole = 25/20*100 = 125. Verification: 125*0.20 = 25.
How to interpret the result
The result reconstructs the reference total from a known share. It is useful for recovering an original price, total population, or pre-discount amount when the percentage is known.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not compute part*percent/100; that finds a percentage of the part rather than reversing the relationship. Keep percent in percentage points, such as 20, for this UI.
Assumptions and limitations
The engine returns zero for a nonpositive percentage, and it does not distinguish percent of original from percent of current value in a real-world statement.
Practical use and checks
Reverse percentage solves for an original whole when a known part represents a stated percentage of it. Enter part 25 and percentage 20 as a check; the whole should be 125, and 20% of 125 is 25. For a sale price of $80 after a 20% discount, do not enter 20 as the share of the original; the sale price is 80% of the original, so entering part 80 and percentage 80 should return $100. That distinction prevents a common pricing mistake. Use the calculator when the percentage relationship is explicitly known, such as recovering a pre-tax price or an original population. Enter the percentage as the UI expects, generally 20 for 20%, not 0.20. Reversing a percentage increase is also base-sensitive: a final value after a 20% increase is 120% of the original, so divide by 1.20 rather than subtracting 20% from the final value. A zero or negative percentage cannot produce a useful whole and is guarded by the engine. The tool does not know whether the percentage includes tax, discount, markup, or a percentage-point change, and it does not model rounding at a cash register. State the relationship in words before entering numbers and verify by multiplying the returned whole by the entered percentage.
