What this calculator does
After checking that maximum heart rate exceeds resting heart rate, the engine applies the Uth heart-rate-ratio equation: VO2max = 15.
Formula and method
After checking that maximum heart rate exceeds resting heart rate, the engine applies the Uth heart-rate-ratio equation: VO2max = 15.3 x (HRmax / HRrest), expressed in ml/kg/min. It rounds that estimate to one decimal and assigns a category from age-banded, gender-selected thresholds; the percentiles field is present but remains empty.
Variables and inputs
Enter resting and maximum heart rate in bpm, age in years, and the male or female category. The UI only rejects nonpositive values, while the engine returns Invalid when HRmax is less than or equal to HRrest. Age bands are under 30, 30-39, and 40 or older.
Worked example
For resting HR 60 bpm, maximum HR 190 bpm, age 30, and male selected, VO2max = 15.3 x (190 / 60) = 48.45, rounded to 48.5 ml/kg/min. In the engine's male age-30-to-39 table, 48.5 is Excellent because it is below the 49.7 Superior cut point but above the 42.4 Excellent cut point.
How to interpret the result
VO2max is an estimate of cardiorespiratory fitness relative to body mass, and the category is only the engine's comparison band. The result can be useful for tracking the same method over time, but it is not a laboratory measurement or a diagnosis of heart or lung health.
Common mistakes to avoid
Use a genuinely resting heart rate for HRrest and a measured or defensible exercise maximum for HRmax. Do not swap the two fields, and do not assume an age-predicted maximum is equivalent to a tested maximum. Keep the gender and age category consistent when comparing results.
Assumptions and limitations
The Uth ratio was developed and evaluated in specific populations, and heart-rate recovery, medications, illness, training status, sensor error, and maximal-effort quality can alter the estimate. The engine's age and gender cut points are simplified and its percentile output is blank. A formal exercise test is more appropriate for clinical or performance decisions.
