How to use the BMI Calculator

What this BMI calculator does
The calculator estimates adult body mass index from weight and height, then displays the corresponding screening category and an approximate reference range. It supports common imperial and metric inputs while keeping the unit conversion separate from the BMI formula.
BMI formula
BMI = weight in kilograms / (height in meters x height in meters). For imperial inputs, the calculator converts pounds and inches before applying the same relationship. The displayed category follows the adult reference ranges used by the selected method.
Worked example
A person weighing 82 kg and measuring 1.78 m has BMI = 82 / (1.78 x 1.78), which is about 25.9. That value falls near the upper end of the standard adult reference bands, but the number should be interpreted with age, muscle mass, health history, and other measurements.
How to interpret the result
BMI can be useful for population-level screening and as one data point in a broader discussion. It does not distinguish muscle, fat, bone, or fluid, and it may be less informative for athletes, older adults, children, pregnancy, and some ethnic or medical contexts. A trend over time can add context, but a single value should not be used to label a person's health or dictate a treatment decision.
Common mistakes to avoid
Use height and weight units that match the selected controls. Do not enter height in centimeters while the form expects meters. Do not interpret a category as a diagnosis or use an adult BMI chart for a child without the appropriate clinical method.
Assumptions and limitations
The result assumes the adult BMI relationship is appropriate for the person and uses the entered measurements accurately. A clinician can combine BMI with waist measurement, body composition, symptoms, history, and other tests for a more meaningful assessment.
