The unit field changes labels only; the engine does not convert values.

Worked example

For 80 cm waist and 170 cm height, ratio = 80 / 170 = 0.4706, displayed as 0.47. Since 0.43 <= 0.4706 < 0.53, the engine returns Increased risk. Entering 31.50 inches and 66.93 inches represents the same proportions only if both are converted consistently.

How to interpret the result

This ratio compares central circumference with stature and can be a useful screening measure. The category is not a diagnosis and should not be interpreted without the measurement method, age, health history, and other risk markers.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not enter waist in centimeters and height in inches just because both fields look numeric; the selector does not fix mixed units. Measure waist at a consistent anatomical site and avoid pulling the tape tight. Do not assume this calculator's 0.43 and 0.53 boundaries match every guideline.

Assumptions and limitations

The engine uses one set of broad cut points and does not adjust them for age, sex, ethnicity, pregnancy, childhood growth, or body shape. It also has no input validation in the calculation function. A clinical assessment should combine waist measurement with BMI or body composition, blood pressure, glucose, lipids, and history.

Why is the unit selector important if ratios have no units?

A ratio becomes unitless only after the numerator and denominator use the same unit. This engine labels the unit but does not convert it, so mixed cm and inches produce a false ratio.

Why can 0.43 change the category?

The engine uses strict less-than checks: 0.43 is not Healthy because Healthy is below 0.43, so it enters Increased risk. The displayed two-decimal value can hide the unrounded value used at a boundary.
