What this calculator does
The engine divides waist circumference by hip circumference and uses a gender string to select thresholds.
Formula and method
The engine divides waist circumference by hip circumference and uses a gender string to select thresholds. For male, ratios below 0.9 are Low, below 1.0 are Medium, below 1.1 are High, and 1.1 or above are Very High. For female, the cut points are below 0.8, below 0.85, below 0.95, and 0.95 or above. The health-risk text is selected directly from those bands.
Variables and inputs
Enter waist and hip circumference in centimeters and select male or female. The component recalculates immediately and formats the ratio to three decimals. The engine returns the unrounded ratio, category, and a short health-risk description; it does not request age, weight, or other clinical factors.
Worked example
With the default male inputs of 85 cm waist and 100 cm hips, WHR = 85 / 100 = 0.850. Because 0.850 is below the male 0.9 boundary, the engine returns Low and describes lower health risk. If the same measurements are assigned female, 0.850 is not below 0.85 but is below 0.95, so the female branch returns High.
How to interpret the result
The ratio describes one aspect of fat distribution and the label is a broad screening output. It should not be read as an individual probability of cardiovascular disease or diabetes; age, ethnicity, body composition, blood pressure, glucose, lipids, and history can materially change the clinical picture.
Common mistakes to avoid
Use circumference values from the same unit and measurement session, and do not enter hip width or clothing size. Check the selected profile before comparing the category. Remember that the female boundary at 0.85 is strict: a ratio of exactly 0.85 falls into the next band.
Assumptions and limitations
The code accepts a free-form gender string and otherwise does not validate positive or plausible measurements. Its thresholds are simplified, sex-specific screening bands and may not match every guideline or population. A high label is not a diagnosis, and a low label does not rule out metabolic disease; discuss concerning measurements with a healthcare professional.
