How to use the Waist Size Calculator

Last reviewed September 14, 2026

What this calculator does

The engine converts waist and height from inches to centimeters when the inches option is selected, then calculates waist-to-height ratio as waist / height.

Formula and method

The engine converts waist and height from inches to centimeters when the inches option is selected, then calculates waist-to-height ratio as waist / height. It labels ratios below 0.4 Underweight, below 0.5 Healthy, below 0.6 Overweight, and 0.6 or higher Obese, and reports 0.4 to 0.5 of height as the healthy waist range in the selected input unit.

Variables and inputs

Enter waist and height in the same selected unit, either inches or centimeters. The outputs are a three-decimal ratio, an engine category, a risk label, and the waist interval corresponding to 40%-50% of height. The UI defaults to 32 inches and 70 inches.

Worked example

For a 32-inch waist and 70-inch height, the ratio is 32 / 70 = 0.457. The engine labels this Healthy and Low Risk, and the healthy range is 70 x 0.4 through 70 x 0.5 = 28.0-35.0 inches.

How to interpret the result

The result applies the page's waist-to-height screening rule, especially the idea that waist should be less than half of height. It is a broad screening signal, not a body-fat percentage, diagnosis, or complete assessment of metabolic risk.

Common mistakes to avoid

Measure waist and height in the same unit and do not mix a clothing size with an anatomical circumference. Keep the tape level and use the same measurement site each time. Do not treat the displayed category as interchangeable with the separate waist-to-height calculator, which uses different cut points.

Assumptions and limitations

The categories and risk words are hardcoded in this engine and do not adjust for age, sex, ethnicity, pregnancy, disability, or child growth. Measurement site and technique can shift the ratio. Discuss a concerning or changing measurement with a clinician alongside blood pressure, glucose, lipids, and other context.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

What does keep your waist below half your height mean?

It is the engine's 0.5 waist-to-height threshold: waist / height below 0.5. For a 70-inch height, half the height is 35 inches, so the rule is a screening comparison rather than a clothing-size target.

Should I convert inches to centimeters first?

You can, but the calculator converts both inputs when inches is selected, so the ratio is unchanged. The important requirement is that waist and height use the same unit selection.
