Formula and method

The engine calculates waist-to-hip ratio as waist circumference / hip circumference. For the male option it labels ratios below 0.9 Low Risk, 0.9 through below 1.0 Moderate Risk, and 1.0 or higher High Risk. For the female option the boundaries are below 0.8, 0.8 through below 0.85, and 0.85 or higher.

Worked example

For a female profile with an 80 cm waist and 95 cm hips, WHR = 80 / 95 = 0.8421. That falls at least 0.8 but below 0.85, so the engine returns Moderate Risk. The same numeric ratio with the male profile would be Low Risk because it is below 0.9.

How to interpret the result

WHR describes the relative distribution of waist and hip circumference, not total body fat. The gender-specific label is the engine's broad screening classification; it does not predict an individual's cardiovascular outcome or replace other measurements.

Common mistakes to avoid

Measure waist and hips at consistent sites and in the same unit. Do not use a pants measurement for waist or the widest available clothing measurement for hips. Do not compare the male and female labels as though their thresholds were the same.

Assumptions and limitations

The thresholds are simplified and do not account for age, ethnicity, pregnancy, muscle distribution, measurement technique, or existing disease. A ratio near a cut point can change with small tape-placement differences. Use a clinician's assessment for risk decisions, especially when other metabolic readings are abnormal.

Why does the same ratio have different labels by profile?

The engine uses separate cut points: 0.9 and 1.0 for male, versus 0.8 and 0.85 for female. Those labels are screening conventions, not a complete statement about personal risk.
