Formula and method
The engine assigns a fixed caffeine density to each beverage type: coffee 95 mg per 8 oz, espresso 63 mg per oz, tea 47 mg per 8 oz, soda 34 mg per 12 oz, and an energy drink 80 mg per 8.4 oz. It multiplies that density by serving size and servings, rounds total caffeine to whole milligrams, divides by a 400 mg daily limit, and compares the total with 95 mg coffee cups.
Variables and inputs
Choose coffee, espresso, tea, soda, or energy drink. Enter servings as a count and size in fluid ounces. The result is total caffeine in mg, a whole-percent share of the engine's 400 mg daily limit, and one-decimal equivalent 8 oz cups of coffee.
Worked example
For two 8 oz servings of coffee, each serving is 95 mg, so total caffeine is 2 x 95 = 190 mg. The daily-limit share is 190 / 400 x 100 = 47.5%, displayed as 48%, and the coffee equivalent is 190 / 95 = 2.0 cups.
How to interpret the result
The result is an estimate based on beverage category and volume, not a reading of a particular product. The cup equivalent is only a comparison scale; it does not mean an espresso or energy drink has the same ingredients as brewed coffee.
Common mistakes to avoid
Check the product label before relying on a category average, especially for large energy drinks and espresso drinks. Enter the total number of servings and ounces, and add caffeine from other foods, medicines, or supplements when considering a daily total.
Assumptions and limitations
The constants do not model brand, roast, brew time, product formulation, serving-size variation, or caffeine-free products. The 400 mg reference is general guidance for most healthy adults, not a personal safe limit; pregnancy, medication interactions, heart symptoms, and individual sensitivity need professional guidance.
