What this calculator does
The engine multiplies hours slept per night by the number of days, multiplies the selected recommended hours by the same days, and subtracts total slept from total recommended.

The engine multiplies hours slept per night by the number of days, multiplies the selected recommended hours by the same days, and subtracts total slept from total recommended. A positive difference is labeled sleep debt by the UI; zero or a negative difference is displayed as on track.
Variables and inputs
Enter average hours slept per night, a number of days, and recommended hours per night. All three inputs are numeric hours or days and may be fractional because the form parses decimals. The result reports total slept, total recommended, and the difference in hours.
Worked example
For 7 hours per night over 7 days with an 8-hour recommendation, total slept = 7 x 7 = 49 hours and total recommended = 8 x 7 = 56 hours. The arithmetic debt is 56 - 49 = 7.0 hours, so the page displays 7h debt.
How to interpret the result
This is a cumulative hour comparison, not a measure of sleep quality or a diagnosis. It can show the size of a shortfall over the chosen window, but it cannot tell whether a person needs exactly the entered recommendation or whether one long night offsets several disrupted nights.
Common mistakes to avoid
Enter average nightly sleep rather than the time spent in bed, and use the same number of days for both sides of the comparison. Do not interpret a negative difference as proof that sleep is optimal; the UI simply calls any nonpositive result on track.
Assumptions and limitations
The model treats every night as interchangeable and ignores awakenings, regularity, sleep disorders, naps, age-specific guidance, shift work, and sleep quality. A calculated debt is not a medical diagnosis. Persistent daytime sleepiness, loud snoring, or disrupted sleep warrants discussion with a health professional.
