How to use the Final Grade Calculator
Last reviewed September 14, 2026
What this calculator does
Treat current grade as the average for the completed weight: current*(weight/100).
Formula and method
Treat current grade as the average for the completed weight: current*(weight/100). Solve target = current*(weight/100) + final*(1-weight/100) for final.
Variables and inputs
Current Grade defaults to 85%, Weight So Far to 70%, and Target Grade to 90%. Weight must be from 0 through less than 100 in the UI.
Worked example
Current work contributes 85*0.70 = 59.5 percentage points. The final is 30% of the course; to reach 90, needed final = (90-59.5)/0.30 = 101.7%, so the target is not reachable under a 100% maximum.
How to interpret the result
The needed score is the final assessment percentage required if the current grade and weights are accurate and the final is the only remaining work.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not subtract current percentage from target without weighting it. Make sure Weight So Far is a percentage of the course, not the number of assignments completed.
Assumptions and limitations
The engine only checks whether needed <= 100; it does not reject negative needed scores or account for extra credit, dropped work, nonlinear grading, or multiple remaining assessments.
Practical use and checks
The Final Grade Calculator finds the score needed on remaining course work after weighting the current grade. Enter current grade 85%, weight so far 70%, and target grade 90% as a check. Current work contributes 59.5 percentage points, leaving 30% of the course; the required final is (90 - 59.5) divided by 0.30, or about 101.67%. That output means the target is unreachable with a final capped at 100%, not that the arithmetic failed. If the target is 80% instead, the required final should be about 68.33%. Use Weight So Far as the percentage of the final course grade represented by the current average, not as the number of assignments completed. Confirm that the current grade is calculated under the same inclusion and weighting rules as the syllabus. A needed score below zero means the target has already been exceeded under the entered assumptions, but the instructor's grading policy may still determine the final course result. The calculator assumes one remaining assessment and linear weighting; it does not handle extra credit, dropped work, multiple remaining categories, grade floors, or nonstandard rubrics. It also does not independently check whether a current grade is a percentage or points value. Keep the syllabus weights and any rounding rule with the output before deciding whether to seek extra work or revise a study plan.
