What this calculator does

The engine applies a fixed 40-hour threshold: regularHours = min(hoursWorked, 40), overtimeHours = max(0, hoursWorked - 40), and overtimeRate = hourlyRate x overtimeMultiplier. Total pay is regularHours x hourlyRate plus overtimeHours x overtimeRate; effective hourly rate is total pay divided by all hours worked.
Variables and inputs
Enter hourly rate in dollars, total hours worked, and an overtime multiplier. The UI defaults to $20 per hour, 45 hours, and 1.5x. The calculation treats all hours as one workweek and does not ask for a workweek start or day-by-day schedule.
Worked example
At $20 per hour for 45 hours with a 1.5x multiplier, regular pay is 40 x $20 = $800. Overtime pay is 5 x ($20 x 1.5) = $150, so total gross pay is $950 and the effective rate is $950 / 45 = $21.11 per hour.
How to interpret the result
The result separates straight-time and premium pay under the route's 40-hour rule. Effective hourly rate is an average across the week; it is not the overtime rate and does not represent take-home pay.
Common mistakes to avoid
Enter total hours for the covered workweek, not only the overtime hours. Use 1.5 for time-and-a-half rather than 50 for a 50% premium. Do not assume this weekly threshold automatically handles daily overtime or a jurisdiction's special rule.
Assumptions and limitations
The engine hardcodes 40 regular hours and does not model the Fair Labor Standards Act's exemptions, state thresholds, multiple rates, tip credit, holidays, breaks, payroll rounding, taxes, or deductions. The UI rejects negative rate and hour inputs but the pure engine has no equivalent validation.
