How to use the Time Card Calculator

What this calculator does
The engine converts each HH:MM value to minutes after midnight.
Formula and method
The engine converts each HH:MM value to minutes after midnight. If the end time is earlier than the start time, it adds 1,440 minutes to treat the shift as overnight. It subtracts the break in minutes, clamps worked minutes at zero, derives whole hours and remaining minutes, divides by 60 for decimal hours, and multiplies decimal hours by hourly rate for gross pay.
Variables and inputs
Enter Clock In and Clock Out as times, unpaid break in minutes, and hourly rate in dollars. A shift crossing midnight is supported when the end clock time is earlier than the start. The output is elapsed hours and minutes, decimal hours rounded to two decimals, and estimated pay rounded to cents.
Worked example
For 09:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break, elapsed time is 510 minutes and worked time is 510 - 30 = 480 minutes. That is 8 hours and 8.00 decimal hours; at $20/hour, pay is 8.00 x $20 = $160.00.
How to interpret the result
The result is straight-time pay for one interval after subtracting the entered break. It can be used as a timesheet check, but payroll may apply overtime, rounding, premiums, deductions, or separate rules that are not represented here.
Common mistakes to avoid
Enter break duration as 30 minutes rather than 0.5 hours, and use the overnight behavior for a shift such as 22:00 to 06:00. Do not treat the displayed pay as take-home pay or as a complete weekly paycheck.
Assumptions and limitations
The engine handles one interval only and does not model multiple shifts, meal-break compliance, overtime thresholds, time-clock rounding, different rates, tips, taxes, holidays, or daylight-saving changes. It also clamps a break longer than the shift to zero worked time rather than reporting a scheduling error.
