How to use the Triglyceride Calculator

Last reviewed September 14, 2026

What this calculator does

The engine classifies one entered triglyceride value in mg/dL using fixed cut points: below 150 is normal, 150 through 199 is borderline high, 200 through 499 is high, and 500 or higher is very high.

Formula and method

The engine classifies one entered triglyceride value in mg/dL using fixed cut points: below 150 is normal, 150 through 199 is borderline high, 200 through 499 is high, and 500 or higher is very high. It returns the category and a short advice string; it does not calculate a risk score or transform units.

Variables and inputs

Enter a triglyceride laboratory value in mg/dL. The input has no fasting-status, age, medication, or unit selector, and the result is one of four text classifications plus the engine's corresponding advice.

Worked example

A result of 225 mg/dL is not below 200 and is below 500, so the engine returns high. A result of 149 mg/dL returns normal, while exactly 150 mg/dL returns borderline high because the lower boundary is inclusive for the next category.

How to interpret the result

The category is a screening label for the entered number, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Very high triglycerides can require prompt medical attention, but a clinician must interpret the actual laboratory report, preparation, health history, and other lipid values together.

Common mistakes to avoid

Confirm that the lab uses mg/dL; mmol/L values need conversion before entry. Do not classify a value from a different lipid field as triglycerides, and do not assume one result determines long-term cardiovascular risk. Pay attention to exact boundaries such as 150, 200, and 500.

Assumptions and limitations

The engine does not know whether the sample was fasting, whether the result is repeated, or whether alcohol, diabetes, thyroid disease, medicines, pregnancy, or acute illness affected it. Its advice is deliberately brief and should not replace a clinician's evaluation. Seek medical care for very high results or symptoms rather than trying to manage them from the label alone.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

What happens at exactly 150 or 200 mg/dL?

The engine uses less-than comparisons: 150 is borderline high, 200 is high, and 500 is very high. That boundary behavior follows the code's categories, while clinical interpretation should use the reporting laboratory and current guidance.

Does this calculator know whether my test was fasting?

No. There is no fasting-status input. Tell the clinician how the sample was collected because preparation and recent food or alcohol intake can affect interpretation.
