How to use the Area Converter

Last reviewed September 14, 2026

What this calculator does

The converter first changes the source area to square meters, then divides by the destination factor.

Formula and method

The converter first changes the source area to square meters, then divides by the destination factor. Its factors are 1 m^2, 1e6 m^2 per km^2, 1e-4 m^2 per cm^2, 1e-6 m^2 per mm^2, 10,000 m^2 per hectare, 0.00064516 m^2 per square inch, 0.09290304 m^2 per square foot, 0.83612736 m^2 per square yard, 2,589,988.11 m^2 per square mile, and 4,046.8564224 m^2 per acre.

Variables and inputs

Enter a numeric area and select source and destination units: square meters, square kilometers, square centimeters, square millimeters, hectares, square inches, square feet, square yards, square miles, or acres. The UI does not impose a positive-area check and rounds the destination display to six places.

Worked example

For 1 acre, the engine computes 1 x 4,046.8564224 = 4,046.8564224 m^2 and then 4,046.8564224 / 0.09290304 = 43,560 square feet. The displayed square-meter value is rounded to six decimals.

How to interpret the result

Area measures a two-dimensional surface. A length factor cannot be reused unchanged: if every side is scaled by a factor, area scales by that factor squared. The conversion changes units, not the physical footprint or its measurement uncertainty.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not apply a length conversion directly to square feet or square inches; square the linear factor first. Keep acres and hectares distinct, and do not enter a perimeter when the field asks for area. Check whether a customary unit is being used in the intended country.

Assumptions and limitations

The factors are fixed standards, with the square-mile factor rounded in the engine. The calculator does not measure an irregular surface, account for surveying conventions, or estimate uncertainty. Rounding after conversion can matter when areas are used in material or cost calculations.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Why are area conversion factors squared?

Area has two length dimensions. For example, 1 foot is 0.3048 meters, so 1 square foot is 0.3048^2 = 0.09290304 square meters.

How do acres and hectares compare?

One hectare is 10,000 square meters, while the engine uses one acre as 4,046.8564224 square meters. Therefore 1 hectare is about 2.47105 acres.

Why can my result differ in the last digits?

The engine uses fixed factors and rounds displayed results to six decimal places. Another tool may retain more digits or use a slightly different customary-unit convention.
