How to use the Fiber Intake Calculator

Last reviewed September 14, 2026

What this calculator does

The engine uses age 51 as its only age breakpoint.

Formula and method

The engine uses age 51 as its only age breakpoint. For the male option it returns 38 g/day below age 51 and 30 g/day at 51 or older; for the female option it returns 25 g/day below 51 and 21 g/day at 51 or older. It selects a canned food-source list from the resulting gram value.

Variables and inputs

Enter age in years and choose male or female. The route does not use body weight, calorie intake, pregnancy, activity, or a medical condition. The result is grams per day plus a text list of example food sources.

Worked example

For the default male age 30: age is below 51, so the recommendation is 38 g/day. Because 38 is at least 30, the source list is beans, lentils, broccoli, whole grains, avocados, berries, and oats.

How to interpret the result

This is a population reference target selected from two age bands and two sex options. It is a practical starting point, not a precise measurement of an individual's requirement or a promise that a listed food alone will meet the target.

Common mistakes to avoid

Notice the boundary at age 51, enter age in years rather than birth year, and increase fiber gradually instead of jumping directly to a large amount. Do not forget that fluid tolerance and medical conditions can change what is appropriate.

Assumptions and limitations

The values are hardcoded and do not adjust for calorie intake, pregnancy, breastfeeding, gastrointestinal disease, bowel symptoms, medications, or clinician-directed diets. The source list is generic and does not calculate the fiber in a meal or verify nutrient content.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Why does the recommendation change at age 51?

The engine uses 51 as a hardcoded breakpoint: male values change from 38 to 30 g/day and female values from 25 to 21 g/day.

Do the listed foods add up to the displayed grams?

No. The list is a set of examples chosen from the target amount. The engine does not calculate portions or total the fiber in those foods.

Why should I increase fiber gradually?

A rapid increase can cause gas, bloating, or bowel changes. Gradual changes and adequate fluid are often easier to tolerate, unless a clinician has given different instructions.
