The engine uses the same piecewise rule for both the dog and cat selections: the first year contributes pet age x 15 human years, the second year contributes 9 more human years, and each year beyond two contributes 4 human years.

The engine uses the same piecewise rule for both the dog and cat selections: the first year contributes pet age x 15 human years, the second year contributes 9 more human years, and each year beyond two contributes 4 human years. It rounds the resulting humanAge to a whole year; the selected species field only changes the label and which raw age property is populated.
Variables and inputs
Choose Dog or Cat and enter a nonnegative pet age in years. Fractional years are accepted. The displayed result is a rounded human-age estimate, while the engine's dogAge or catAge result retains the entered numeric pet age for the selected species.
Worked example
For a 3-year-old dog, the first two years contribute 15 + 9 = 24 human years and the third contributes 4, giving 24 + (3 - 2) x 4 = 28 human years. A 3-year-old cat receives the same 28-year output because both branches currently use the same rule.
How to interpret the result
This is a simple comparison scale, not a biological age measurement. It illustrates the engine's faster early-life weighting and slower later weighting, but the label does not predict health, behavior, or remaining lifespan.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not use the old one-human-year-to-seven-pet-years shortcut as though it were this engine's rule. Notice that changing Dog to Cat does not change the current formula, and remember that fractional results are rounded for display.
Assumptions and limitations
The engine does not account for breed, adult size, genetics, health, nutrition, sterilization, or life stage, and it applies an identical rule to dogs and cats. Veterinary life-stage guidance can differ substantially, so this output should not guide care, screening, or medication decisions.
