What this calculator does
In Steps and stride mode, the engine multiplies step count by stride length in centimeters, converts centimeters to meters, then reports kilometers and miles using 1,609.
Formula and method
In Steps and stride mode, the engine multiplies step count by stride length in centimeters, converts centimeters to meters, then reports kilometers and miles using 1,609.344 meters per mile. In Time and pace mode, it divides walking minutes by pace in minutes per kilometer and converts kilometers to miles. Results retain full precision in the engine and the view formats them to three decimals.
Variables and inputs
Choose Steps and stride or Time and pace. Steps are a nonnegative count and stride length is in centimeters; the engine multiplies every counted step by that entered length. In pace mode, walking time is in minutes and pace is minutes per kilometer.
Worked example
For 10,000 steps and a 76 cm stride, distance is 10,000 x 76 cm = 760,000 cm = 7,600 m, or 7.600 km. Converting 7,600 / 1,609.344 gives about 4.722 miles. The pace mode would instead use minutes / minutes per km.
How to interpret the result
The steps result is only as good as the stride length and step count. The pace result describes distance implied by a constant average pace, so it is useful for a planned walk but does not measure the route itself.
Common mistakes to avoid
Enter stride in centimeters, not meters, and make sure the measurement represents the distance the engine should assign to each counted step. In pace mode, use minutes per kilometer rather than kilometers per minute or minutes per mile.
Assumptions and limitations
Stride changes with speed, terrain, footwear, fatigue, and individual gait, while a step counter can miscount or use a different definition of a step. The pace mode assumes one constant pace and neither mode accounts for elevation, route curves, stops, or GPS error.
