What this calculator does
The engine calculates tip percentage as tip amount / bill amount x 100 when the bill is positive, rounded to one decimal place.
Formula and method
The engine calculates tip percentage as tip amount / bill amount x 100 when the bill is positive, rounded to one decimal place. It adds bill and tip for the total, then divides total and tip by split count when split count is positive, rounding each per-person result to cents. A split count of one still computes per-person values even though the UI hides those cards.
Variables and inputs
Enter the bill amount and tip amount in dollars and the number of people sharing the bill. The percentage is inferred from the entered dollar tip, so the bill base can represent a pre-tax or post-tax amount according to the convention you choose; the engine does not know which one it is.
Worked example
For an $85 bill and a $17 tip, tip percentage is $17 / $85 x 100 = 20.0%, and total is $85 + $17 = $102.00. If four people split it, total per person is $102 / 4 = $25.50 and tip per person is $17 / 4 = $4.25.
How to interpret the result
This tool works backward from a tip amount to show its percentage and split the resulting total. It does not recommend a tipping rate or decide whether tax, service charges, or gratuity should be included in the bill base.
Common mistakes to avoid
Divide the tip by the bill, not by the bill plus tip, when reproducing the displayed percentage. Decide whether the bill includes tax before entering it, and expect a one-cent remainder when a currency total cannot divide evenly among people.
Assumptions and limitations
The engine does not model sales tax, service fees, automatic gratuity, local tipping customs, unequal orders, cash rounding, or currency other than the dollar-style display. It accepts a dollar tip rather than a requested percentage, so a negative or unusual value is not interpreted as a recommendation.
