How to use the Tip & Bill Split Calculator

What this calculator does
The engine calculates tip = bill x tipPercent / 100, totalBill = bill + tip, and perPerson = totalBill / splitBetween when the split count is positive.
Formula and method
The engine calculates tip = bill x tipPercent / 100, totalBill = bill + tip, and perPerson = totalBill / splitBetween when the split count is positive. The UI falls back to one person for a missing or invalid split count and shows shortcut buttons for 15%, 18%, 20%, and 25%.
Variables and inputs
Enter bill amount in dollars, tip percentage, and number of people. The bill is the taxable or pre-tip base selected by the user; the route has no separate tax, service-charge, currency, or unequal-order fields.
Worked example
For a $50 bill, an 18% tip is $50 x 0.18 = $9.00. Total is $59.00. With two people, the equal split would be $59 / 2 = $29.50 per person; with the default split of one, per-person total is $59.00.
How to interpret the result
The result is an equal-share arithmetic split of the entered bill plus tip. It does not decide what tip is customary, whether tax should be tipped, or how to divide a bill when people ordered different amounts.
Common mistakes to avoid
Decide whether the tip percentage applies before or after tax and enter the matching base. Count people rather than menu items. Check the total before rounding individual shares because a real group may need a one-cent allocation adjustment.
Assumptions and limitations
The engine does not model sales tax, service charges, automatic gratuity, coupons, unequal consumption, payment fees, currency conversion, or jurisdictional tipping practices. A nonpositive split is treated as one person, and the pure engine does not validate all numeric inputs.
