How to use the Length Converter

What this length converter does
This converter changes a length between millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers, inches, feet, yards, and miles. It first represents the source value in a common base unit, then applies the destination-unit factor so the direction of the conversion is clear.
Conversion method
A conversion follows value in target units = value in source units x source-to-base factor / target-to-base factor. For example, one inch equals 0.0254 meters exactly, while one foot equals 0.3048 meters. The inputs are the numeric value and source unit; the result lists the equivalent destination units. The calculator applies the selected factor and then formats the displayed precision.
Worked examples
5 kilometers equals 5,000 meters because 1 kilometer is 1,000 meters. 12 inches equals 0.3048 meters because 12 x 0.0254 = 0.3048. The underlying factor is more precise than a short display rounded to a few decimal places.
How to interpret the result
The result is an equivalent length, not a change in the physical object. Choose the source unit for the value you already know and the destination unit for the value you need. Check the displayed precision before copying a result into another calculation. Exact defined relationships, such as inches to meters, are different from the uncertainty of a physical measurement made with a ruler or instrument.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not reverse the source and destination units. Do not mix length with area or volume conversions; their factors are squared or cubed. Keep metric prefixes such as milli, centi, and kilo attached to the correct unit.
Assumptions and limitations
The converter uses standard unit definitions and does not account for local measuring conventions, survey definitions, or instrument error. Rounding is for display and can matter when chaining several conversions. If the source measurement is uncertain, report that uncertainty alongside the converted value. A conversion cannot improve measurement accuracy.
