Variables and inputs
The category defaults to Length, value defaults to 1, source defaults to meters, and destination defaults to feet. Available categories are length, weight, temperature, volume, area, speed, and data.
Worked example
For the default 1 m to ft: base meters = 1 * 1 = 1 m; feet = 1 / 0.3048 = 3.280839895 ft. For temperature, 32 F first becomes 0 C, then becomes 273.15 K if K is selected.
How to interpret the result
The conversion changes the numerical representation while preserving the physical quantity. Area and data factors are not interchangeable with length or byte conventions.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not use a length factor for area or volume. Check whether data means bits or bytes, and remember that temperature conversion needs an offset as well as a scale factor.
Assumptions and limitations
The data category uses binary factors for KB through TB, while common storage marketing may use decimal prefixes. The speed factor for km/h is a rounded constant in the source engine.
Practical use and checks
Use the Unit Converter when a measurement is already known but a recipe, specification, or instrument uses another unit system. Select one category first, then choose the source and destination units so a length is not accidentally compared with an area or a volume. For a quick check, enter 2 meters in the length category and choose centimeters: the result should be 200 centimeters, while 2 square meters would be 20,000 square centimeters in an area-aware tool. That distinction matters when estimating flooring, paint, or material quantities because squaring a length changes the scale. The number is the same physical quantity expressed in different units, so use the destination label when copying it into another formula. Temperature deserves special attention: 32 degrees Fahrenheit should return 0 degrees Celsius, not a value found by simple multiplication. The data option also follows binary powers for the displayed KB, MB, and larger units, which may differ from decimal storage marketing. Do not use a converted result as a measurement uncertainty estimate. Rounding, a mislabeled source unit, or a device specification using gauge pressure or another convention can matter more than the last decimal place.
